Day 21 -- Istanbul

First post, so not up to speed on pix and layout. Will work on it.

Beth and I arrived Istanbul yesterday at lunch time. Short flight from Tel Aviv but might as well have been a journey to another world. Tel Aviv was noisy, hot, intense, tough people, visually bland. Here it's mellow, old, temperate, Mediterranean. We're staying in a tiny apartment with a little balcony in the Sultanahment, the old city center, a stone's throw from the Blue Mosque, the Haya Sofia and Topkapi Palace. The muezzin call to worship get echoes from several minarets. After struggling to read Hebrew, it's comforting to be in a place where at least the letters -- though not yet the words -- have meaning. We're setting up house, about to go visit the sites. Tomorrow night, we're having dinner with a young couple who're friends of Barry and Anya.

More soon.
